Clamps on sparFINALLY, we were through with building ribs. The next step was to build a main spar and rear spar for each wing (biplane means 4 wings!).

The spars are built like an I beam - a top and bottom cab with a plywood web, plus assorted stiffners, blocking for future hardware and the like.

I have builder blueprints (like building a house!) which you see in the photo. It seems like we need a million clamps.

Ribs on spar
Next the kids needed to layout or position where the ribs would go, then the ribs needed to be squared on both main and rear spars.

We slide the ribs onto the spars just to see how they look, get a general feel for things, any ribs not quite right tolerance wise, etc.

We number the ribs, they look pretty good, so off they come.

Now comes careful measurements, checking, always double checking.

When everything's been checked for square, glue 'em down!
